Funeral Mass for John C. "Papa John" Dewey of Arapahoe will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Arapaho Catholic Cemetery at St. Stephen's. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at St. Stephen's with a wake to follow at his home, 395 Left Hand Ditch Road, Big Wind. Mr. Dewey died on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colo. He was 64. John Charles Dewy was born at St. Stephen's on Dec. 7 1944, the son of Andrew Raphael Dewey and Flora (Goodman) Dewey. He was an auto mechanic by trade and life-long resident of the Wind River Indian Reservation. Mr. Dewey was of the Catholic faith and attended St. Stephen's Catholic Church. He was a Medicine Man for the Arapaho tribe. His family said he helped many people as Ceremonial Grandfather and was a strong believer in the Indian ways. Mr. Dewey organized basketball tournaments for teenagers and young men and helped take care of his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his sons, Dean Dewey of Fort Washakie, Alan Addison of St. Stephen's, and Brindin White of Arapahoe; daughters, Chrystal Dewey of Riverton, Deliah Dodge, and Denise Piper; adopted daughters, Tina Jenkins, Angelia Warren, Flora Crazythunder, Sassie Warren, Regina Dewey, Mary Teresa Yellowplume, and Twila Dewey; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister, Frances Dewey of Arapahoe. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Flora Dewey; brothers, Linus Dewey, Robert Dewey, and George Dewey; sisters, Lucille Washington, Rosemary Dewey, and JoAnn Birdshead; grandsons, Donovan "Boney" Blackburn and Joshua Bryson Dewey; adopted daughter, Georgeanne "Sweet Pea" Shamblin, and granddaughter, Morning Star Dewey.
