Walter E. Sims of Riverton died on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Morning Star Manor at Fort Washakie. He was 93.

No services will be held.

Walter Edward Sims was born in Colton, Calif., on April 27, 1916, the son of Price Charles Sims and Ethel (Davidson) Sims. The family moved to Wyoming in 1918 and he grew up in the McFadden area.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. While in the Army, he won all-around cowboy championship honors at the first rodeo held in Hawaii. He continued to calf rope and team rope until the age of 72.

On Sept. 23, 1950, he married Norma Coates in Chadron, Neb. The couple later divorced.

Mr. Sims worked in construction and was a laborer, retiring from Riverton School District 25.

He was a charter member of the Lander Old Timers Rodeo Association.

Survivors include three sons, James Sims and his wife Kathy, Doug Sims and his wife Melanie, and Ross Sims; six grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
