Her parents divorced, and Ruth married Jesse Leonard Hughes. Six children were born to this union, but two children died at a young age. Her step father worked in the oil fields in Colorado and Wyoming, and the family moved several times during her school years. They moved to Riverton, Wyoming in 1942.

On November 9, 1944, Mabel married Pat Wilkinson. They moved to Walla Walla, Washington, then moved to Salem Oregon from 1945 to 1946 where their first child was born. They returned to Riverton, Wyoming in 1946. Mabel finished her schooling by correspondence and graduated in 1948. They bought a house and two lots on Bell Street in 1948 and raised seven children together. In 1960, they built their new house on the front lot and still raised a large garden between the old and new house. The couple later divorced.

Their favorite past time was going camping and fishing with family. They loved to attend dances at The Eagles, VFW Club and Senior Citizen’s Center, and made several trips to Colorado and Idaho to visit family. They also enjoyed a trip to Alaska to visit Johnny's son.
