Memorial services for Joan Herbst of Shoshoni are at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton. Echo Klaproth will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Herbst died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 20, 2010, at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander. She was 83. Joan Konig was born in Kocevje, Yugoslavia, on Feb. 28, 1927, the daughter of John Snyder and Helen Konig. She moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., from Yugoslavia at the age of 11, then to Lander to be with her mother and step-father two months later. She was graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander with the Class of 1948. On June 3, 1948, she married Charles Herbst in Lander.After her marriage, she moved to Shoshoni to ranch with her husband. Mrs. Herbst was a homemaker with the Herbst Ranch Company of Shoshoni. She has also worked at Spriggs Grocery in Lander, while in high school, and in the high school lunch room during the same period of time. She was a past member of the Shoshoni Homemakers Club and the Shoshoni PTA. Her family said she enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren and husband, gardening, rock hunting, and reading. Survivors include two sons, Charles Herbst and his wife Nancy of rural Shoshoni and Albert Herbst and wife Debbie of Lysite; a daughter, Donna Brooks and husband Jeff of Lander; grandchildren, Mandy Hill of Denver, Dain and Nathan Medow of Riverton, Brenda Cannon of Laramie, and Wyatt Herbst of James Port, Mo.; great grandchildren, Bailey Brooks, Harly Brooks, Paxton Medow, Annika Medow, Logan Medow, and Hallie Newton; a brother, Joe Herbst of Lander; sisters, MaryAnne Campbell and husband Chip of Lander, and Francena Davis and husband Pierre of Milpitas, Calif. Mrs. Herbst was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 1995; three infant brothers and sisters; an infant son, Eugene, and a sister Lillian Clapp, her father John Snyder and mother Helen and step father Frank Joe Herbst. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of the Davis Funeral Home, 2203 West Main Street, Riverton, WY 82501.
