|Mary “Theresa” Hanway, 75, of Arapahoe, passed away at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. There will be a rosary recited at 7:00 pm on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at Davis Funeral Home. A second rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Monday, February 12, 2018, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. A wake will follow at 1560 17 Mile Road. The funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with interment to follow at Arapaho Catholic Cemetery.
Mary Theresa Hanway was born on September 6, 1942 in Arapahoe, WY to Ernest C. Hanway, Sr. and Nellie (Duran) Hanway. She lived in the Arapahoe area and attended St. Stephen’s School until she was sixteen years old when she moved to Seattle, WA for the next ten years.
She was baptized into the Catholic faith and was a devout member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. She also had strong beliefs in the Native American Church and the Native ways.
While in Seattle she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the Seattle University. She worked in the Social Work field for over 50 years in Colorado, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming. When she came home to the Wind River Reservation she made it her mission to help the local tribes and spent 37 years working as a Social Worker for the Northern Arapaho Tribe.
She loved being with her family and especially all her grandchildren and great grandchildren, cooking, and attending ceremonies. She was always helping people and was a strong advocate for children and anyone in need.
She is survived by her son, Brian Williams, Sr. and wife, Margo, their children, Brandon, Stacie, Shanel, Kristen, Derrick, Brian, Jr, and Camryn; daughters, Nikki White, and companion Vincent Brown, their children, Maya, Newborn Twin Girls; Sheri Carlson and husband, Bill, their children, Kyle, Halle, and Emma; adopted sons and daughters, George Leonard, Marcus White, Baillie and Jawy Friday, Larry and Deidra White, Audra White and family, Vince and Leola White and family, Bonnie White and family, Renette White and family, Rikina and Bill Armour family, and Rita Ann Ridgely and family; great grandchildren, Korbynn, Suri, Layla, Evan, Brenna, Davin, Luka, Emi, Izzi, Cassity, Nadia, Derrick Jr., and Mara; last living aunt, Dorothy Hanway Piney; brothers, Paul Joe Hanway and family, Darrell Hanway, Sr. and family, and Buddy Oldman; sisters, Darlene Hanway-Lopez and family, Patricia Haway and family, Kathryn Hanway and family, and Joyce Hutchinson and family; close friend and father of her children, Crawford White, Sr.; lifelong friends she took as sisters, Juanita Jefferson Lenore Stiffarm; special friend, Sara Wiles and many others; adopted daughters, Sheri Blackburn, Lou Oldman, Bunny Oldman, Mary Rose Goggles, and Cheryl Little Bird; adopted sons, Steven Headley, Leo Headley, Jr., Forrest Headley, Dominic Norse, Wayne Norse, Matthew Norse, Billy Joe Goggles, Darrell Hutchinson, and Austin Grazythunder; and many numerous brothers, sisters, children, and grandchildren of the Friday, Duran, Hanway, Lawson, Blackburn, Oldman, Roman, Pingree, Armajo, Groesback, Spoonhunter, Moss, White, Willow, Norse, Wanstall, Addison, Trosper, Goggles, Large, Delorme, Redman, Hutchinson, SunRhodes, Whiteplume, Harris, Brannon, Sitting Eagle, Whiteman, Jeffrey, Stiffarm, Antelope, Dewey, Birdshead, Underwood, Shakespeare, Jenkins, Brown, Shoyo, St. Clair, Shotgun, Thunder, Harjo, Black, Warren, and many many other families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Carol Hanway Blanco and Marie Ann (Moss) Willow; and brothers, Ernest Hanway, Jr., Charles Jeffrey, and Philbert McCloud.
