A Celebration of Life for Walter Carlin “Bud” Skates, 91, who died March 28, 2013 at his home in Riverton, will occur later this summer near Cody, Wyoming. Memorial contributions to the Amedisys Hospice in care of Davis Funeral Home is appreciated.
He was born August 31, 1921 in Haakon County, South Dakota, son of Walter E. and Ruth (Carlin) Skates.
Bud was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy in the Pacific Theater until the completion of the war.
Bud worked as a broker for Ryan Grocery Company of Billings, MT and also owned and operated a ranch and grocery store in Eagle Butte, SD. He also worked for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe as a manager of the Super Value Store and Sewing Center. Later in life, he worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and then owned a small engine repair shop.
Mr. Skates enjoyed playing cards, riding horses, bowling, fishing and was an adamant Denver Broncos fan. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Bud was a 50 year Masons member and also a member of the Lions Club, American Legion, VFW and Elks.
Survivors include his sons, Ronny C. and his wife, Cheryl Skates of Helena, MT, Dave L. and his wife Judy Skates of Lander; daughter Renee M. and her husband Kelly Brost of Riverton; 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; brothers, Jack Skates of Cody, WY, Robert “Bob” Skates of Billings, MT and Fred Skates of Denver, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters; Marge Boehrs, Doris Brown, and Wanda Hellod; brother Bill Skates.
