Funeral services for John Big Knife, 84, will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 9, 2013 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy, Montana. Interment will follow at Rocky Boy Veterans Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #67. A wake will be held in Crowheart, Wyoming on Saturday and also at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Rocky Boy, MT on Sunday.
He died on September 5, 2013 at Help for Health Hospice Home in Riverton, Wyoming.
John was born on November 17, 1928, in Butte, Montana, son of Flora (Stump) and Big Knife.
Mr. Big Knife served in the Army during the Korean War from January 12, 1951 until October 29, 1953.
In the early 1960’s he moved to Wyoming and on December 23, 1964, he married Lou Ella Nipwater in Lander, Wyoming.
During Johns earlier years, he participated in rodeos. He also enjoyed playing hand games, traveling to pow-wows with his wife and family and attending his grandchildren’s many functions.
He worked at the Dubois Saw Mill, for the BIA as a Ditch Rider and also was a laborer for the Post and Pole.
He was a member of the VFW Ramar Brown Post #10056 in Dubois, Wyoming.
Survivors include his son, Harley Big Knife; 2 daughters, Jodi Big Knife Jorgenson and Samantha Big Knife all of Crowheart, WY; brothers, Joe (Roberta) Big Knife of Rocky Boy, MT, Sky Child (Yvonne) Big Knife of Fort Washakie, WY and Charlie Big Knife of Canada; sisters, Jean (Clement) Hobbs of Box Elder, MT, Ruby Big Knife, Minnie Big Knife, Evelyn Big Knife, Mary (Joe) Merasty of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan and Alice Littlehead of Lamedear, MT; grandchildren, Alfred Willow, Jr., Wolfe Willow, Joseph S. Big Knife, Alicia F. Willow, Harmony Monroe, Josie Cantu, Miken Cantu, Wyatt Jo Anderson, Nyla Jo Red Willow, Alfred Red Willow, III, Anthony Joseph Red Willow, Diamond Willow Roy and Patricia Taylor Roy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, granddaughter, Jovan Willow and sister, Dorothy Big Knife.
