Joan A. Spoonhunter, 71 of Riverton died Saturday, November 9, 2013 at the Wind River Healthcare. A rosary will be 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. A wake will follow at the Spoonhunter home, 897 17 Mile Road. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at the Church with burial to follow at the Spoonhunter Cemetery.
Joan Audrey Spoonhunter was born January 31, 1942 at Arapahoe, Wyoming to James Francis and Marguerite Agnes (Warren) Spoonhunter. She was a member of the Arapaho Tribe. She attended St. Stephen’s School through 12th grade, attended the Carroll College in Helen, Montana for two years; the Univeristy of Wyoming where she received her Bachelor’s Degree and the University of Utah where she received her Master’s Degree.
She was a member of the St. Stephen’s Catholic Church and was active in the Cursillo Movement while living in Montana. She loved to travel, collect antiques, sewing, and cooking. She also served on the Riverton Memorial Hospital Board.
She began working for the Pima County Government in Tuscan, Arizona, later taught at the University of Wyoming and Arizona State University, was a social worker on the Wind River Reservation, in Fairbanks, Alaska, and Ft. Belknap, Montana.
She is survived by three brothers, W.J. George Spoonhunter, Martin (Jackie) Spoonhunter, Jeffrey (Kristin) Anderson; sisters, Agnes S. Logan, Delores Cuch, Marg St. Clair and husband Reuben, Charleen Hoover, Frances Spoonhunter, Kathie Kelley Morsette; aunts, Anita Portwood and Geraldine Brown; uncles John A. Warren, Sr. and Robert Warren. neices, Celia M. Logan, Leslie Spoonhunter and Children, Jessica Guffey and Children, Claire L. Spoonhunter and Children, Misty D. Spoonhunter, Laynell Spoonhunter, Cynthia Shakespeare and family, Sandra Shakespeare and family, Toni Williams and family, Becky Maldonado and son, Colleen Tigue and family. nephews, Tom Logan and Paige Loveland and sons, James Logan and children, Adam Logan and Kortni and daughters, Ransom Logan and Jill and girls, Reed Logan and Angie and children, Warren Logan and Kayla and sons, Jacob Logan, Roy Logan, George J. Spoonhunter, Carl Starkloff, S.J.; sisters, Marian Spoonhunter, Geraldine Shakespeare; brothers-in-law, Ray Logan, Alfred C’Hair; grandparents, Roy and Angela (Lone Bear) Spoonhunter, Ben Sr. and Pauline (Underwood) Warren; nephews and nieces, Winston Spoonhunter, Julian J. Maldonado, Anthony Medicine Cloud, Kara and Jamie Guffey, Kai Leigh St. Clair, Esther Spoonhunter and Jerome Carl Spoonhunter.
