Joan “Jody” McGowan, 77, of Riverton, died on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation – Wind River Center. A family graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at Mountain View Cemetery.
Joan Van Detta Smith was born on June 18, 1937 in Winner, SD to William Harrison and Viola Mae (Bristol) Smith. She was one of eleven children. She grew up in South Dakota.
She was a waitress and also managed hotels her entire working life.
She loved her reading and when she started loosing her eyesight, she started to listen to books on tape, and she also enjoyed garage sales.
She is survived by her sons, Todd Sachtjen of TN, Tim Sachtjen of Sioux City, IA, and Greg Sachtjen of Rapid City, SD; her sisters, Diane Hill of Rapid City, SD and Corale Parker of Hay Springs, NE; her brother, Duane Smith of Puyallup, WA; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Viola Smith, her son Barry Sachtjen, three sisters and four brothers.
