Arnold Syverts, 86, of Riverton died on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. A reception for family and friends, those lives he touched, will be held on Friday, January 16, 2015, at the Elks Club in Riverton from noon to 2:00 pm.
Arnold Douglas Syverts was born on January 22, 1928 in Newell, SD to Andrew and Lola M. (Crossen) Syverts. He was one of three boys and was raised in Newell, SD. He graduated from Newell High School with the class of 1947 and received honors in Science and Mathematics. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Black Hills State College and his Masters Degree from the University of Idaho.
On June 26, 1949, he married his wife of 65 years, Maxine A. Turpen, in Newell, SD. Together they raised their two children, Valerie and Steve. In 1955 the family moved to Riverton, WY and made that their permanent home.
Mr. Syverts first taught school in a two teacher rural school, Horsecreek School, grades four through eight. He then taught eight grade in the Igloo, SD school system. After moving to Riverton, he taught seventh grade math at the Riverton Junior High for five and half years. He then became the Assistant Principal for Riverton High School for fifteen years before returning to the classroom in the fall of 1974. He retired from teaching in the eighties.
He was a member of S.D.E.A.; a life member N.E.A; 25-year member of W.E.A; 25-year member and past president of R.E.A.; 15-year member of N.A.S.S.P.; 15-year member of the Wyoming Principals Association; and a member of the Wyoming Science and Math Teacher Association. He also was a member and past president of the Riverton Kiwanis Club; past member of Riverton Jaycees; member and past officer of the Riverton Elks Club; member of Riverton Lions Club; member and past secretary of Riverton Sno-Goers; member and past president of Riverton Federal Credit Union; and a past member and president of the Board of Fremont County Nurses and Health.
He was a member of the Riverton Methodist Church and was a very active member. He initiated and sponsored the first three years of the Junior High Methodist Youth Program, served on the Board of Trustees of the church as well as several committees and commissions. He was a fifteen member of the Methodist Men’s Group. He also helped to imitate and served on the board of directors of “Fish”, a community program for emergency help and aid complete with a 25 hour telephone services manned by volunteers.
In his spare time he coached girls softball for years, supported all the school activities, and enjoyed time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Riverton; his daughters, and Valerie Syverts of Riverton; his son, Steve Syverts of Casper; his granddaughter, Shania Fischer of Casper and Thea Smith of Casper; his sister-in-law, Dr. Patty Luebben and her husband, Bob of Denver, CO and nephew, John Cady of Denver, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Lola Syverts and his brothers, Frank Syverts and Lawrence Syverts.
