Gehrig P. “Big” Gantenbein of rural Pavillion died Friday July 24, 2015, at his home. He was 82 years old.

Gehrig Patrick Gantenbein was born in New Albin, Iowa on March 4, 1933. He was a twin, born to Gail U. Gantenbein and Florence (Lane) Gantenbein. He was named after the famous baseball player Lou Gehrig. He got his nick name “Big Twin” from his mother. He was born 2 minutes earlier than his brother Gary and slightly bigger. The nicknames for the twins “Big” and “Little” followed the boys throughout their lives.
He moved to the Pavillion area with his family in 1949 and attended the Pavillion schools where he graduated in 1953. He joined the army right out of high school where he was a medic on the front lines in the Korean war. After completion of his service he returned to the Pavillion area. He married Alice Gordon on August 27, 1955. He worked in sheet metal and construction later forming a construction company with his wife Alice. The couple resided in the Riverton area while raising three children. During his career he worked on large industrial projects throughout the west.
After retiring the couple moved to a farm near Pavillion in the summer of 1995, where they raised cattle and started a bait fish business. Gehrig was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening and spending time with family, as well as following the UW sports teams and the Denver Broncos.
He is survived by his children; Tom Gantenbein of Pavillion, Susan Parris and her husband Tim of Murrieta, California and Kristen Gantenbein of Palm Springs, California; grandchildren Amy Parris and Katie (Neil) LaPorte; and great-grandchildren Cash and Paisley LaPorte.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Gantenbein, parents and 5 siblings; Betty Smerud, Gordon Gantenbein, Gail Gantenbein, Joseph Gantenbein and his twin, Gary “Little” Gantenbein.
