Private family services will be held at a later date for Carl A. Manning, who died at his home in Riverton Monday afternoon, April 7, 2008, at the age of 91.
Carlton A. Manning was born in Elgin, Ill., on Sept. 5, 1916, the son of Charles A. and Grace (Hunt) Manning. He grew up in the Elgin and Chicago areas of Illinois and moved to Wyoming in the mid 1930s.
He worked in the oil fields of Wyoming from 1935 until 1963 and then was an automobile salesman until his retirement in 1985. He had worked for Choppings and Ainsworth Buick in the 1970s and 1980s, then for Coliseum Motors-Plymouth Center and Clayton's Used Cars in Casper, the latter as a partner with Tom Clayton.
On Dec. 23, 1949, he married Ione Campbell in Red Lodge, Mont.
His family said second only to his love of telling tall stories about his days in the oil field boom years, Mr. Manning loved his wife and family very much. He enjoyed his friends and meeting people.
Survivors include sons, Carl E. Manning and his wife Tanis of Riverton, and Charles Manning and his wife Linda of San Marcos, Calif.; daughters, Marcie Ersland of Las Cruces, N.M., and Claire Manning of Danville, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Catherine Manning, Claire Peart, Cori Manning, Sherry Mullins, Marc Ersland, Shannon Manning, and Jennifer Vecellio; four great grandchildren.
Mr. Manning was preceded in death by his wife, Ione, in January of 2008; his parents; brothers, Jack and Edwin, and an infant daughter, Carole Jean.
