Helen Jean Capellen, 86, of Riverton passed away Friday afternoon, May 20, 2016 at Wind River Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at the Davis Funeral Home with viewing preceding the service from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow the service at the Mountain View Cemetery.
Helen was born in Riverton, Wyoming on October 12, 1929 to Leo Robert and Mildred Leah (Johnson) Schenck growing up in Morton and Riverton. The family spent two years in Roosevelt, Utah and moved back to the Riverton area to the family home. She married Willis Dean Capellen on April 8th 1949 in Morton, Wyoming.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church.
Helen worked at the family business, Leo R. Schenck General Merchandising Store at Morton. The couple also ran the Morton Café for a short time after their marriage. Her favorite interest was being her husband’s right hand woman. The family says they were inseparable. She also was the baker for the Ashgrove School lunch room.
The family also said she loved being with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and children. She loved to travel with family and friends from camping in the Wind River Mountains to trips to Australia.
Helen served many years on the Board of Directors for the Riverton Senior Center, participated in the school district grandparents program where she enjoyed reading to the children. She also participated in local blood drives as a donor.
She is survived by her two sons, Barry D. Capellen and wife Barb and Ricky L. Capellen both of Riverton; two daughters, Sandra L. and husband Ernie Phinney of Riverton and Theresa L. McCoy and Dave Orndorff of Casper; brother James Schenck and wife Cathy of Cheyenne, WY; twelve grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Mildred Schenck; husband Willis “Bill” Capellen; brother, Dick Schenck; and sister, Mary Lou Long.
