Darrol George Born, age 90, of Lander Wyoming, passed away on November 11, 2017 of natural causes. Darrol was born on October 9, 1927 in Homer Michigan to George Harlow and Vera Zoe (Smith). As a result of the great depression, his parents and seven siblings moved to Yosemite National Park. While living in Yosemite, Darrol developed passions for hunting, fishing, horses, and skiing. He attended Mariposa Elementary School; and graduated from Modesto High School.
At the outbreak of WWII, Darrol enlisted in the United States Navy. He and his twin brother Deuel served on the carrier USS Hancock in the Pacific. Darrol graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1950 with a B.A. in Range Management. He was a passionate teacher of science, biology, and reading and started his teaching career in Placerville, CA. He then went to teach in Mannheim Germany where he met a fellow teacher Carol Jean Hendon. They were married on January 19, 1963, and had three sons John, Stuart, and Scott who were all born in Heidelberg, Germany. Joined by three sons, Bob, Bryce and Greg from a previous marriage the family traveled extensively throughout Europe.
Wanting to return to Wyoming, Darrol took a teaching position in Lander at Starrett Junior High in 1967. He earned a M.A. in Education Administration in 1973. In Germany he coached basketball and soccer. In Lander, he started the Nordic Ski Team program with sons John and Scott earning all-state honors. He coached the Lander Nordic Ski Team until his retirement from teaching in 1990.
With his six sons and wife he enjoyed horses, fishing, camping hunting, and skiing. Darrol developed a passion for learning that remained with him throughout his life. He was an avid reader and could typically complete the New York Times crossword puzzle in less than an hour. He never missed Jeopardy and could answer most questions because; as he stated, he was a “storehouse of useless information”.
He is survived by his sons: Robert Born of Lander, WY, Bryce (Sharon) Born of Riverton, WY, Greg (Kathy) Born of Buffalo, WY, John Born of Frisco, CO, Stuart (Carol) Born of Lousiville, CO, and Scott Born of Cody, WY; sister, Eloise Trickett of Fresno, CA; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parent, George and Vera Born; wife, Carol Born; and siblings, Deuel Born, Gerald Born, Gordon Born, Leona Rohde, Eileen McNamara, and Maxine Culver.
As a remembrance, a fund has been established to support the Lander Valley High School Nordic Ski Team. Should friends desire, contribution can be made at http://www.gofundme.com/darrolborn.
