A Memorial service for Evelyn Irene Black, 87, will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the Sunnyside Church of the Nazarene near Kinnear, Wy. Cremation has taken place. Memorial contributions may be made to the Compassionate Ministries of the Church of the Nazarene in care of Davis Funeral Home.
Evelyn went to be home on Saturday, December 22, 2018.
Evelyn “Evie” was born on February 14, 1931 in Hospers, Iowa, daughter of Emil William and Bertha Marie (Stofferan) Klamm. At age 5, she moved with her family from Sheldon, Iowa to Lake County, South Dakota where she attended all 12 years of school, graduating from Orland Consolidated High School in 1949. As a junior she worked as a nurses’ aid and worked as a house keeper her Senior year. She won many spelling bees and tap danced for PTA meetings the first two years of school, played basketball, sang in choir and was in the Senior Class play.
On November 19, 1949, Evelyn married Albert “Jiggs” Black at the Methodist Church in Madison, South Dakota. Three sons were added to that union: Dennis, Jim and Vern. They farmed in South Dakota from the time of their marriage, until January of 1969. Evelyn was a farmer’s daughter and a farmer’s wife. She raised 500 baby chicks annually, gardened and canned. Later her hobbies included quilting and some crafting, many of which were gifts or donations.
On March 1, 1960, Jiggs and Evelyn sold everything except personal items that would fit into a two wheel trailer and moved to Coeur’ d Alene, Idaho. Both obtained positions boxing ice cream at Van’s Creamery.
In 1962, they purchased a farm near Pavillion, Wyoming, residing there until the fall of 1966 when Evelyn enrolled in Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, ID, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Business Education, June 1970. In 1969, the family returned to the family farm until it was sold in 1997 and purchased their home on US Hwy 26. Evelyn was employed by School District 25 in the Business Dept. for 24 years, retiring in 1993. She was a member of the Education Association, served as Secretary for one year, a Sponsor of the Junior Class for 2 years. She was nominated in 1972 to the Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Gamma and served as secretary for one year.
As a member of the Sunnyside Church of the Nazarene since 1962 she held many positions as well as serve as District NWMS treasurer. She researched and prepared a bulletin board for the denominations’ 100th Anniversary as well as Sunnyside’s 25th for which she prepared a booklet. A notebook is on display of Sunnyside History for the 60th Anniversary.
The Back Pack Program at Wind River Elementary was started by Evelyn. She sent Care Packages to troops in Iraq. Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters.
Survivors include her husband of 69 years; sons, Dennis and his wife, Myra Black, James “Jim” Black, and Vernon “Vern” Black all of Riverton; granddaughters, Teri and her husband, Josh Williams of Las Vegas, NV, Tami and her husband, Mike Wade of Cheyenne, WY, and Tiffany and her husband, Travis Vendela of Kaysville, UT; 7 great grandchildren, Taylin and Makiya Wade, Quentin, Traden, and Kayden Vendela and Wyatt and Carter Williams.
Mrs. Black was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Walter, Leonard (Avis) and Merle (Ida) Klamm; sisters, Helen Klamm, Adeline (Walter) Vanhove, and Beverly (James) Randall; nephew, Mark James Allen.
