Funeral services for Michael “Big Mike” Brian Standing Elk will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Blue Sky Hall. Interment will follow at Friday Oldman Cemetery with a feast to immediately follow at Blue Sky Hall. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 14, 2023 at Blue Sky Hall with an all-night wake to follow at Donita Standing Elk’s residence, #6 Thunder Lane in Ethete, Wyoming.
Michael passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 in Arapahoe, Wyoming.
Michael was born on November 3, 1980 to Annette Sunrhodes and the late Henry Standing Elk Sr in Riverton, Wyoming.
He grew up on the Wind River Reservation, then moved to Ronan, Montana and graduated from Kicking Horse Job Corps in 2002, with his heavy equipment operator certification. After getting his certification he moved back to the Wind River Reservation and shortly after he was employed with the shoshone and arapaho roads department. He also worked with the Northern Arapaho utilities and Wind River hotel and casino as a security officer. He also attended Arapahoe school, St.Stephens, Wyoming Indian, and Heart Butte High School
Michael enjoyed driving around, listening to music, hanging out with his bros, and spending time and teasing with his sisters and family members. He also really loved playing pool and going to tournaments.
He survived by his mother Annette Sunrhodes, Stepmom Donita Standing Elk; Daughter, Annabella Sage; Brothers, Tommy Standing Elk, Jess Standing Elk, Allen Standing Elk, Jimmy Standing Elk; Sisters, Collette Standing Elk, Connie Standing Elk; Aunts, Patricia (Milton) Oldman Trosper, Marie Gambler, Liz Sunrhodes, Olivia Burton; Uncles, Jerry, Ernie, Dominic Sunrhodes, Seidal Standing Elk, Terry Spoonhunter, Matthew & Jude Charging Crow; Grandmas, Alvena Oldman, Elsie Standing Elk; Grandpas, Edwin Standing Elk, Alfred Redman; Numerous beloved nieces, nephews, grandsons and granddaughters and cousins who he took as his brothers and sisters; Families of the Standing Elk, Sunrhodes, Addison, Goodman, Bushyhead, Spoonhunter, Smith, and Underwood.
He was preceded in death by his father Henry Standing Elk Sr.; Aunts, Colleen Addison, Patsy Arthur, Cathy Eaglestaff, Madeline Spoonhunter; Uncles, James Oldman, Billy Oldman, John Redman Sr. Oscar Redman, Frank (Wimpy) Sunrhodes; Grandparents, Jimmy Oldman, Hubert redman, Ernest and Ruth Sunrhodes Sr, Benno Standing Elk Sr. Aurilda Spoonhunter.
We are deeply sorry if we forgot anyone, for Michael’s family was fairly large.
