Funeral services for lifelong Fort Washakie residence, Franklin Louis Shongutsie, 72, will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, January 5, 2024 at Eastern Shoshone Boys and Girls Club. Interment will follow at Sacajawea Cemetery. An all-night wake will begin at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Eastern Shoshone Boys and Girls Club.
Mr. Shongutsie passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023 at Morning Star Manor in Fort Washakie, Wyoming surround by family.
Frank was born on February 13, 1951, son of Lindbergh Shongutsie, Sr. and Catherine (Aragon) Shongutsie in Fort Washakie, Wyoming. He was given the Indian name of Baingweechee’. Franklin helped his aunt Susie Shongutsie raise George Shongutsie and Lincey Shongutsie, Sr.
He attended school in Fort Washakie as well as Fremont Vocational High School in Lander, Wyoming.
In his younger years he like to camp, hunt and fish at Crow Creek. He enjoyed riding calves, riding horses and helping drive tractors on the family ranch. He enjoyed watching the Sundance and powwows; he would walk around and around the powwow arbor during the local powwows. He also enjoyed traveling to handgames with his nephews George and Lincey throughout the western US and even to Alberta, Canada. In his later years, he participated in activities at the Morning Star Care Center where he spent the remainder of his life. The Shoshone language was his primary language and spoke fluently, english was his second language.
He had a special bond with his grandkids Lincey Shongutsie, Jr., Lena Gould and Kiauna Shongutsie whom continue to call him “Gampa Pank.”
Survivors include his brothers, Lindberg and Jeffrey Shongutsie and his sister, Anita Setzer. Aunts: Beverly Thomas, Zelma Aragon and Elaine Pevo (Pocatello, ID); Sisters: Anita (Harvey) Setzer, Rachel Hern (Albuquerque, NM), Patricia Martinez (Albuquerque, NM) and Mari Dorrance (Albuquerque, NM); Brothers: Lindberg Shongutsie, Jr. and Jeffery Shongutsie (LaConner, WA); Nephews: George Shongutsie, Lincey Shongutsie, Sr,, Bradley Setzer and Brian Setzer; Nieces: Bobbi Shongutsie, Emily Shongutsie, Shauntel Setzer and Cheyenne Setzer,
