Gretchen Scoles died on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, at Wind River Healthcare in Riverton. She was 86.
At her request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
Gretchen Forbes was born in Elroy, Wis on February 26, 1923, the daughter of Floyd and Mildred Forbes. She married Gordon Scoles on Jan. 6, 1946, in Elroy, Wis.
Mrs. Scoles earned a B.S. degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, and was a 25-year school teacher in Wisconsin and Wyoming, finishing her career in the Shoshoni School District 24.
Mr. and Mrs. Scoles moved to the Pavillion area in 1971 to be near their daughter and grandchildren. Life-long farmers and ranchers they raised draft, quarter, and paint horses, ranging from the Grand Champion Belgian Stallion at the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress, to National Champion Paint Stallion, APHA honor roll reining horses, and many state and regional performance, halter, and chariot racing champions. Their interest was in speed and performance horses and they spent years racing horses in the Midwest and Rocky Mountain region. They held an annual production sale for many years, both in Wisconsin and Wyoming, for horses they raised.
Her family said the couple enjoyed watching their grandchildren at rodeos, horse shows and county and state fair and supported Fremont County 4-H and Fair.
Mrs. Scoles is survived by her sister, Audrey Preuss of Elroy, Wis.; her daughter, Kitty Peck of Pavillion; grandson, Shawn Steffen and his wife Mistalyn and their children Braydon, Mason, and Ashley of Riverton; granddaughter, Candy Peck of Riverton; grandson, Gordon Peck and son Ethan of Riverton; grandson, Gilbert Peck and his wife Elisa and their sons Stran and Keifer.
