Simon R. Blackman of Arapahoe died Sunday morning, June 3, 2007, at his home. He was 70 years old.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Arapaho Catholic Cemetery at St. Stephen's.
There will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton. A second rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at Eagle Hall at St. Stephen's with a wake to follow at the family home, #100 C'Hair Lane, Arapahoe.
Simon P. Blackman was born on Oct. 14, 1936, at St. Stephen's, the son of John and Frances (Blackbull) Blackman. His Indian name was High Eagle. He lived all of his life on the Wind River Reservation and attended school at St. Stephen's.
Mr. Blackman worked as a ranch laborer.
He attended St. Stephen's Catholic Church and the Native American Church. He participated in Arapaho Sundance.
His family said he enjoyed hunting and fishing, riding horses, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Blackman is survived by adopted children, Frances Monroe, Melvin Blackburn, Jane Dewey, Angela Brown, Joseph Blackburn, Jr., Irene Houser, Monica Antelope, Rhonda Headley, Glenda Moss, Germaine Shakespeare, and Bonnie Shakespeare; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters, Lucy Blackburn, Anastasia Blackburn, and Helen Hanway; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Blackburn, Sr., and Leroy Shakespeare, Sr.; friend, Burton Hutchinson, Sr.; ceremonial grandsons, Darwin Gambler, Sr., Henry Arthur, and Kenny Whiteman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Joyce Blackman, Martina Blackbull, Mae Norse, and Monica Welch; nephews, Refer Stoney Blackburn, John Blackman, Kenneth Shakespeare, and Curtis Shakespeare.
