In Loving Memory

Janis Haggerty

Janis Haggerty, 91, of Riverton, Wyoming, passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Wind River Rehabilitation and Care Center. Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 7, 2025 at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton.  A Celebration of Janis’ Life will follow 3:00 p.m. at the Reach Clubhouse, 622 N. 8th Street West in Riverton.

Janis May Lund was born on September 14, 1933, in Long Pine, Nebraska, to Oliver and Irene (Cochran) Lund. She grew up in rural Shoshoni and graduated from Shoshoni High School as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1951. On March 2, 1952, she married Earl L. Haggerty at the United Methodist Church in Riverton, Wyoming. They were married for over 72 years when Earl passed away on October 20, 2024. Together, they raised two children, Jacquie and John, in the Paradise Valley / Missouri Valley area.

Janis was a member of the first 4-H club in Fremont County. She earned trips to the Denver Stock Show for chicken judging and to Chicago for dress review. When Jacquie and John were old enough, Janis and other women from the Paradise Valley Helping Hand Club started the Hi-Riders 4-H Club, where she served as a leader for 10 years. She also entered open class exhibits at the county fair, including produce, canned goods, flowers from her garden, photographs, and garments she had sewn for herself, her children, and grandchildren.

Janis worked as the secretary at Ashgrove Elementary School for 32 years, retiring in 1992. Dozens of teachers remember her for her assistance and organization, and hundreds of students remember her for punching lunch tickets, applying band-aids to scrapes and scratches, and letting them use the phone to call home.

After she and Earl retired from farming at their Sand Gulch Ranch, they moved to Shoshoni to be closer to their grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities. Janis joined the Shoshoni Christmas Club and spent many years as an officer for the Shoshoni Alumni. Later, they moved to Riverton, where she was active in the Red Hat Society, Curves, and enjoyed playing bridge and pinochle.

Janis loved spending time with her five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She enjoyed genealogy and photography, creating dozens of family photo albums for her children and grandchildren, as well as smaller albums of flowers, family reunions, and places she and Earl had visited with friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Jacquie Boespflug of Riverton; son, John (Lori) Haggerty of Harlingen, Texas; brothers, Richard (Dick) Lund and Curt Lund; sister, Mary Hoffmann; five grandchildren, Troy (Tiffany) Dornblaser, Katy (Tim) Prescott, Amy (Michael) Owens, Andrea (Ryan) Gilbertson, and Doug (Jessica) Haggerty; and eight great-grandchildren, Blake and Chase Norton, Aiden and Avery Prescott, Patrick and Tristan Dornblaser, and Jordan and Natalie Gilbertson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Haggerty; parents, Oliver and Irene Lund; sister, Bonnie Cook; and brother, Allan Lund.
