Funeral Service
Merlin Arthur, 70, of Arapahoe, Wyoming passed away on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Help for Health Hospice Home. A vigil service with a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm on Monday, December 23 at Eagle Hall followed by the wake also at Eagle Hall. The funeral service will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church with burial to follow at Arapaho Catholic Cemetery. Feast to follow at Great Plains Hall.
Merlin Joel Arthur was born on May 26, 1954 in Riverton, Wyoming to Simon Leo Arthur, Sr. and Elsie (Swallow) Arthur. Merlin lived his Wind River Indian Reservation, graduating from Riverton High School. He was a member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe.
Merlin was baptized into the Catholic faith but also believed in the Native American Ways.
On November 14, 1975 he married Mary C. Addison in Lander, Wyoming. They celebrated 49 years together this last November.
He was employed with the Northern Arapaho Tribal Housing for 43 years. He started as a labor and worked his way up to Crew Supervisor, having been instrumental in building many homes.
Merlin and his brother, Mike started the run and gun with the Arapahoe Eagles basketball team. He played in Sunset Red Band with Darrell Gambler, Hubs Warren, Kenny Monroe, Evert Monroe, and Hank StandingElk. He enjoyed listening to music, working on cars, watching his favorite shows; Sons of Anarchy, Mayans M.C., Yellowstone. He also liked watching football, softball, and basketball and cheering on his teams.
He loved being with his family and was the backbone of the family. He helped out a lot of families and friends. Merlin would like to thank Pat Goggles and wife, Emery’l LeBeau, Roxy Martine, Camille Smith, Francinda Wallowingbull, Karen Black, Sandra C’Bearing and Rhoda Anderson. Thanks to Jud White and his dad for all the prayers, Wayne Norris Jr., and countless others for their prayers. Thanks to Larry Makeshine for his words of encouragement. Thanks to everyone whom all prayed for him.
He is survived by his wife, Mary c. Arthur; sons, Merle Ty Arthur, James “Sonnie” Arthur, III, Robert Arthur, Nickerson Arthur, and Patrick Arthur; daughters, Melinda Arthur, Melissa J. Arthur, Linda Arthur, Jessie M. Arthur, Ann Howell, and Laurene Surrell; grandchildren, Miles M. Arthur, Jordan Arthur, Oskar Surrell, and Kanan Arthur; brother, Simon Arthur, Jr.; sisters, Simona Arthur and Rhonda Anderson; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, aunts, uncles, adopted brothers and sisters, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon and Elsie Arthur; sons, Merlon Arthur and Miles Arthur; grandparents, Michael and Letiticia Arthur; brothers, Leroy Lincoln, Bruce Armor, Clarence Athur, Michael Arthur, Patrick Arthur, Sr., Johnny G. Arthur, and Dominic Arthur; and sisters, Lucy L. Arthur, Carlita Brown, and Marlene Sun Rhodes.
