Riverton native Shay Eugene Dickson died with his wife by his side on Sunday, March 14, 2010, in Kirkland, Wash., after a six month battle with melanoma cancer. He was 40.
A celebration of life was held at the Women's Club in Kirkland, Wash., on Thursday afternoon, March 18.
Shay was born in Riverton on Sept. 26, 1969. He was the son of James E. "Jim" Dickson, formerly of Riverton, and grandson of George and Dixie Dickson of Riverton.
He was graduated from Richland (Wash.) High School in 1987 and was a six-year member of the Coast Guard Reserves.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Washington State University in 1994 and his Masters degree in computer science from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2001.
He married his wife, Mari, on March 26, 1996, and, in 2004, they bought their home in Bothell, Wash. Their first son, Kyle, was born in 2006 and their second son, Connor, was born in 2008.
His family said Mr. Dickson loved his family, the outdoors, and had a passion for hiking. They said he could be found most weekends with his friend, Max, hiking in the Cascade Mountains.
He was a volunteer for the King County Explorer Search and Rescue.
Mr. Dickson worked for Motorola in Chicago, Ill., until 2002, then WaveLink in Washington, and, in 2005, he joined SpaceLabs Healthcare.
He is survived by his parents, Jim and Jan Dickson of Maui, Hawaii; wife, Mari; sons, Kyle and Conner; aunt, Gina (Dickson) Decker; cousins, Jason and Chris Decker, Heather (Decker) Gilrane, and Dionne (Decker) Gada.
