Mona was born on September 14, 1943, in Webster, South Dakota, and was raised on the family farm in Roslyn, South Dakota. She attended school at Sacred Heart in Eden, South Dakota, before continuing her education at St. Benedict’s Boarding School and Catholic College in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Black Hills Teacher College.
In 1967, Mona moved to Wyoming after touring the Riverton area with her college choir and spent the remainder of her life there. She married James A. Marshall on August 10, 1968, in Riverton, Wyoming. She was a devoted Catholic, baptized in the faith, and actively involved in St. Margaret’s Catholic Church. She was a member of the Riverton Council of Catholic Women, served as a Eucharistic Minister for the homebound, taught CCD classes, and sang in the St. Margaret’s Choir.
Mona had a long and impactful career in education. She began teaching at Ashgrove Elementary in 1967 before moving to St. Margaret’s School, where she taught third grade, music, and kindergarten. She was also the first preschool teacher when the program was established. She later worked at Lincoln Elementary until her retirement in 2005. Even after retiring, she continued volunteering in schools throughout the county until September 2024.
Beyond teaching, Mona had many passions. She loved painting, playing and teaching piano, singing, finishing antique furniture, reupholstering antique furniture, water skiing (teaching many children and adults to ski), traveling (visiting France, Italy, Hawaii, Canada, and many places across the U.S.), four-wheeling, quilting, and sewing. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family, children, grandchildren, siblings, and friends. She especially enjoyed visits to Minnesota and northeastern South Dakota, near her birthplace.
Mona is survived by her children, Charles R. Marshall and wife, Tami; James A. Marshall and wife, Courtney; and Martha "Marti" E. Marshall-Achenbach and husband, Rob; her eight grandchildren, Keegan Marshall, Brandon (Taylor) Marshall, Ashton (Kassidy) Marshall, Maddalia Marshall, Corbin Marshall, Hayden Achenbach, Kalyn Achenbach, and Ashni Marshall; and three great-grandchildren, Tatum Marshall, Banks Marshall, and Wrenley Marshall.
