E.J. Cox, Jr., of Riverton died Wednesday morning, Oct. 6, 2010, at the Help for Health Hospice Home in Riverton. He was 89.

According to his wishes, no services will be held and cremation will take place.

E.J. Cox, Jr., was born in Quail, Texas, on April 3, 1921, the son of Evret James Cox and Anne Berthina (Simmons) Cox.

He grew up in San Jon, N.M., graduating from high school there and attended college at New Mexico, A&M in Las Cruces. Mr. Cox served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, as a navigator in a B-24 over Europe. He continued to serve in the Reserves after his discharge from active duty.

On June 1, 1946, he married Barbara Elizabeth Bell in Spring Creek, Texas.

Mr. Cox was of the Baptist faith.

He was a mine superintendent for Union Carbide, having retired from the mining industry in 1986. Earlier in his life he worked as a crane operator and had started as a laborer in the industry.

Mr. Cox was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Riverton, member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge in Riverton, Sertoma Club of Riverton, 2010 Club International, International Order of Odd Fellows, and the Riverton Country Club.

His family said he loved playing golf.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Riverton; a son, Charlie; a daughter, Jeanne; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a great great granddaughter, Ella; a brother, Jimmy Cox of New Mexico, and a sister, Betty Hust of New Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters.
