Funeral services for Delbert V. Edwards of Riverton are at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 18, at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton. Dale Adams will officiate and military honors will be presented. Interment will be at the Cuppy’s Grove, Iowa cemetery at 2:00 p.m., April 28th.
Mr. Edwards died at the Sheridan Living Center of the VA Hospital in Sheridan Monday morning, April 11, 2011. He was 89.
Delbert Vinding Edwards was born in Shelby County, Iowa, on Feb. 27, 1922, the oldest child of Leslie L. and Evalyn (Vinding) Edwards.
He was graduated from Harlan (Iowa) High School in 1941.
On June 2, 1944, he married Loa Dell Handy in Harlan, Iowa.
Mr. Edwards served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, entering military service in July of 1944. He served as a First Class Fireman aboard LST 1110 in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946 and returned to pursue a career shelling corn. He was a farmer by trade, coming to Wyoming to take a veteran's homestead in the North Portal area north of Riverton in 1951. He lived briefly in Jackson in 1965 and then moved to Cass County, Iowa, in 1965, and farmed near Marne, Iowa, until retirement. He lived at Harlan, Iowa from 1995 to 2004 when he returned to Riverton. In addition to farming, Mr. Edwards also drove truck and was a mechanic. His family said Mr. Edward had a deep bass voice and liked to sing. He sang in the Navy Choir at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station.
Mr. Edwards collected guns and old gas engines.
He was of the Baptist faith and active in the church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he was a Past Commander.
He is survived by his wife, Loa Dell Edwards of Riverton; three children, John Edwards and his wife Jodi of Riverton, Robert Edwards of Belgrade, Mont., and Mary Maher and her husband Duane of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren; a brother, Keith Edwards.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Evalyn Edwards; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Edwards, and maternal Vinding grandparents; two brothers, Howard and Lee Edwards.
