Maria de Jesus "Susie" Martinez of Riverton died at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander on Wednesday morning, June 1, 2011. She was 74. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 7, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Riverton. The Rev. Eric DePew officiates and interment follows at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton. A viewing is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, June 6, at the Davis Funeral Home of Riverton. Maria de Jesus Lopez was born in Star County, Rio Grande City, Texas, on March 19, 1937, the daughter of Pablo Lopez, Sr., and Caroline (Garcia) Lopez. In 1951, she married Alfredo Rodriguez. They were later divorced. In August of 1988, she married Santiago "Jimmy" Martinez in Riverton. Mrs. Martinez grew up in the Catholic faith and later became a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Born in Rio Grande City, Texas, she moved to Austin, Texas, in 1964, then to Riverton from Austin in 1968. Mrs. Martinez worked for years as a migrant worker in Texas and Wyoming. Later she worked for many years as a housekeeper. Her family said she enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, gardening, needlework, camping, Mexican dances and music, quilting, watching television, and cooking. Survivors include sons, Carlos Rodriguez, Alfredo Rodriguez, Jr., and Guadalupe Rodriguez and his wife Nae; daughters, Sophie Reyes, Elida Rodriguez Goodman, Adelina Cron and husband Richard, Mary Penfold and husband Rod, Graciela Rodriguez, Debbie Rodriguez, Selena Nells and husband Reuben; 31 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren; brothers, Pablo Lopez, Jr., Henry Lopez, Lucio Lopez, Robert Lopez, and Raymond Lopez; sisters, Sarah Vigil, Juanita Barajas, Caroline Baldez, and Lucy Acves. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Esperanza Ramirez; a brother, Thomas Lopez.
