Gordon “Roy” Maxson, 86, of Riverton, died at his home on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. There will be a viewing at Davis Funeral Home on Friday, May 15, 2015, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015, at St. Margaret’s Gym at 9:00 am with Father Wagner officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Reach Club House following the graveside.
Gordon LeRoy Maxson was born on July 19, 1928 in Liberal, MO to Oren Curtis and Susan Ann (Jones) Maxson. When he was eight years old, the family drew a homestead in the Pavillion area and moved to Fremont County. He attended Pavillion schools and remained in Fremont County the rest of his life.
He was of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church.
On June 22, 1950, he married Twila June Padgett in Riverton, WY. Together they raised three children while farming and ranching on the homestead originally settled by her folks. They purchased three adjoining properties and established Maxon Farms. In 1952, Roy was hired to drive school bus for the Shoshoni School, a job he would keep for 40 years. He thoroughly enjoyed transporting the students and athletes to school and many events around the state. He was honored as the #1 school bus driver in the state during one school bus convention. He and his wife also started and ran the family business of selling irrigation pipe.
Twila passed on August 1, 2009 after 59 years of marriage. After her passing Roy continued to live at the family home and oversee the farming and ranching business.
His family said that he enjoyed watching all high school sports, especially basketball. He liked to fish, hunt, and ride his horse in the mountains above Lander as he checked on his cows at the summer pasture.
He is survived by his daughter, RoJean Thayer and her husband Terry; his sons, Gordon Maxson, Jr. and his wife Sandy and Roger Maxson and his wife Brenda; his brother, Stanley Maxson; his grandchildren, Michelle Thayer, Tara (Brian) Blumenshine, Curtis Thayer, Matt Maxson, Mark Maxson, Mike (Brandi) Maxson, Cati Maxson, Brandee Maxson, Christina (Steve) Nelson, Melissa (Shane) Lesher, and Chuck (Jena) Apadaca; 20 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
His was preceded in death by his wife, Twila J. Maxson; his parents, Oren and Susan Maxson; his brothers, John Maxson, Alfred Maxson, and Art Maxson; and his sisters, Elnora Maxson and Dorothy Eisemann.
