George Amos Burns will be singing tenor for Jesus, as he joined Anna in Heaven on October 10, 2024, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyoming, peacefully with his oldest and youngest daughters, Virginia and Carol, by his side. A Rosary will be held at St. Margaret’s Church in Riverton, Wyoming, on October 17, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a viewing at 11:00 a.m., and a funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be at Mountain View cemetery following the Mass, with a luncheon to be held in St. Margaret’s School gym following the burial.
George was born in Riverton, Wyoming, on December 25, 1927, and lived in Fremont County, Wyoming, his entire life, spending 28-1/2 years in Dubois before moving to Riverton for 33 years, at Mountain Vista in Lander for about 8 years, and was residing at Homestead in Riverton since February of this year.
George was baptized into the Catholic faith when he converted to have his marriage blessed in the Church in 1951 and was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church.
George entered the U.S. Army on October 5, 1950, and served until being Honorably discharged on September 23, 1952. He was stationed in Germany, Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, and Camp Pickett, Virginia, during the Korean War.
George worked as a ranch hand for Medley Wertz for four years. On November 1, 1949, he started his career with Riverton Valley Electric Association, where he worked for forty years, retiring on November 1, 1989.
George married the love of his life, Anna Mae Jares, on May 10, 1951, in Lander, Wyoming, and together raised six children: Kenneth (Susette), Philippines; Virginia (Ralph) Trotter, Casper, Wyoming; Johnnie (Mary), Hyattville, Wyoming; Cindy (Allen) Keinert, Sahuarita, Arizona; Susan (Dan) Higgins, Cody, Wyoming; and Carol (Bill) Richards, Woodburn, Oregon. George had 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War, and 4088. He was a member of each one of these for over 60 years, earning a lifetime membership.
George received Man of the Year for St. Margaret’s Church, Wyoming Family of the Year from the Knights of Columbus, Outstanding Leadership Award for Riverton Valley Electric Association, and Citizen of the Year from the City of Riverton, Wyoming. He was a loved and valuable member of Riverton and Fremont County.
George enjoyed the great outdoors, hunting, fishing, and rock hunting. George enjoyed watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren participate in sports.
George is survived by his six children, ten grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Anna Burns; his mother and step-father, Jerod and Hilda Burns; his four brothers, Lawrence Parkins, Guy Parkins, Ralph Parkins, and Henry Burns; and two granddaughters, Jennifer Shelton and Cathrine Zarn.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Margaret’s Catholic School or Abba’s House or a charity of the donor’s choice.
