William Edward Meckem, a decorated Korean War veteran, devoted husband, and pillar of his community, soared into eternal rest on February 23, 2025, at the remarkable age of 96.

Born on March 11, 1928, in quiet Dubois WY, William lived a life defined by courage, service, and an unwavering love for his family and country.

Known to all as “Bill,” he answered the call of duty in 1950 when the Korean War broke out. As a combat air pilot, he flew numerous missions with skill and bravery, piloting fighter jets through perilous skies to protect his fellow soldiers and defend freedom. His service earned him several commendations, though he rarely spoke of his honors, preferring instead to let his actions stand as testament to his character. After his tour of duty, Bill returned home with a quiet pride and a deep appreciation for peace, which guided him throughout his long life. He continued his flying service by joining the Wyoming Air Guard in 1957, flying the F-86 Sabrejet and protecting the skies over Wyoming until the end of 1963.

In 1959, Bill married his lifelong love, Lorraine, whom he met playing in a band at the Wort Hotel in Jackson. Together, they built a warm and welcoming home, raising three children—Jon, Dawn, and Kirk—whom he taught to value resilience, honesty, and the simple joys of life. Bill’s steady presence and dry humor made him a rock for his family, and his tales of aerial maneuvers and wartime camaraderie captivated his four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who adored their “Papa Bill.”

Professionally, Bill transitioned his piloting skills into a civilian career, starting up an Air Charter company in Jackson, alongside his many land development projects in the valley, as well as his 17-year tenure on the Jackson Hole Airport board. He was instrumental in spearheading the runway expansion on that airport, which now sees the most air traffic in the entire state.

An avid skier from a young age, he helped foster a love of skiing in his children, his grandchildren and soon, his great grandson.

William was predeceased by his parents, William A and Mae Meckem and his sister, Violet.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, his children, Jon Meckem, Dawn Meckem, Kirk Meckem and wife, Kristen; his grandchildren, Abigail, Graham, Miles, Sergei, and Wolfgang; and his great-grandchild, Darwin William.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Dubois Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the VFW 107 S First Street in Dubois, where family and friends are invited to share stories of Bill’s extraordinary life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dubois Senior Center, honoring the cause Bill held dear, in care of Davis Funeral Home, 2203 West Main Street, Riverton, WY 82501.

William Edward Meckem took his final flight, leaving behind a legacy of valor, love, and a life lived with purpose. He will be missed, but his spirit will soar on in the hearts of all who knew him.
